How to Decide Between Flying into Key West or Miami When Staying in Key West

Are you planning a trip to Key West in the coming months and deciding which airport you should fly into? There are many pros and cons to both options, and at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to your personal preference.

While flying into Key West is abundantly more convenient, we’re more than aware that it often comes with a hefty price tag.

Please note: The drive from Miami International Airport can range from 3.5 hours-5 hours depending on traffic.

A few questions that must be asked before making your decision:

  1. How much will it cost to rent a car for a few days?
  2. How much will gas cost?
  3. How much is the parking fee at the hotel or home you’re staying at (As an aside, many of our properties include free parking.)
  4. Will all of these costs add up to the equivalent of just buying a flight directly into Key West?

Typically, we see guests opt to fly into Key West as many of our properties are only a few miles away and they’d rather not deal with the stress of the drive. But on the other hand, some guests view the drive from Miami Airport down to Key West as part of the vacation. (You should do it at least once! It’s beautiful.)

There are many places you can stop along the way. Grab a bite at Green Turtle Inn, take a break and have the opportunity to feed tarpon by hand at Robbies, or stop by the Turtle Hospital for a tour.

Our recommendation: If you’re taking a long weekend in the Keys, fly into Key West to truly soak up every moment on vacation, rather than spend valuable time in the car.

If you’re visiting for a few weeks, take the drive and make a trip out of it.
